Groundhog day
So I found myself explaining groundhog day to a student the other day (he had only recently moved to the US from DR). In thinking about this I became curious as to just how accurate Punxsutawney Phil was. I thought it’d be a great class activity (if i had one) in “doing science”.
I had a feeling that digging up data on this would be hard, but I was wrong. Turns out the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) had put together a special climate report on the issue. Check out the link HERE. The study found no correlation between Phil’s behavior and the temperatures the following month. But it turns out there are many “official” groundhogs across the US, including at least 4 in NY. Check out the Map HERE.
